Thursday Afternoon Knit along

Hi Everyone

Hope you have been enjoying this great weather we have been having. The Thursday knit along group has neared the end of it’s project so it’s time to start a new one! . We will be doing a one day project next week Thursday Feb 2nd. which will be “newfie mittens” these are the ones using two colours and look kind of like a stained glass window. Go to the link below and you will see them. If you are interested in doing them please print off the free pattern and join us at 1 pm on Thursday Feb 2nd. You will need size 4mm dpn’s needles, . Then the week after which is Thursday February 9th we will be starting an afghan which is on display in my window on loan from one of my customers, she has done a wonderful job on it. Below is a link to the pattern and photo’s of it. If you are a Ravelry user you can see many photo’s of finished afghans there, it has been a very popular project. The afghan is called Lizard Ridge and is knit with Noro Kureyon, using a different colour way for each square, so you can buy it one ball at a time and knit as few or as many squares as you want. I will be offering a special on the yarn. After you have purchased your 10th ball you will receive the next on free. Please do check it out it wonderful. some great new products

One of the most exciting things about being the owner of The Purple Sock ( well, besides opening all the boxes of fabulous yarns when they arrive!), is finding new and different items for the shop.

I particularly love finding small local business, run by women, who share a passion for creating lovely things...and this brings me to the two new businesses that I want to showcase today....

Donna Light, owner of Cedar Point Soaps of Waubaushene, and I, go back a long way....to the days when I was a soap-maker as well, and we would run into each other at local craft fairs and Farmer's Markets. But since opening The Purple Sock, my soap making days are no more, so I am thrilled to now carry Donna's incredible handmade soaps. Oven baked and inspired by the earth and forest, her soaps lather beautifully and the aromas of them will make your bath or shower a wonderful experience! Donna, with her Metis background has chosen some wonderful names for her soaps, and the packaging is simply that - simple...no plastic, no excess wrapping, just a plain and simple band of paper which lets the soap shine on its' own. The other new item in the shop ( which is selling so quickly that I am on my third order!) is from "The Woodlot" in Meaford Ontario. Aptly called "Firewood Artistry", Jessie's design flair is just what is needed to top off your latest sweater or shawl. The buttons, shawl pins and toggles are just stunning. Reclaimed timber and fallen trees are cut and polished and finished with tung oil and beeswax to create these one-of-a-kind buttons. With the bark still on, and the grain highlighted, these are pieces that will catch your eye ( and everyone else's!) when you wear your latest scarf, shawl or sweater. We first found Jessie at The Knitters Fair in Kitchener this fall where the people at her booth were three deep, so it's easy to see that her commitment to "giving old wood new life" is something worth sharing! Christmas is coming

Well, just as it does every year, Christmas is coming fast and furious!! And this year, I have added a feature to the shop that I hope will make your present opening a fun experience! We have all opened our share of food processors, irons, reindeer slippers and pink tool kits...but this year, I want you to be able to open a present that you REALLY want!

So to make that easier for the present buyers in your life ( hubby, kids, relatives, fellow knitting friends),The Purple Sock now has a "Wish List"! All you do is come in, choose the items you would love to see under your tree and write them into my little "Wish List Book"...then when the kids, your hubby, or your sister-in-law come in...their work is done! Thursday Knit along

Hi Everyone

Hope you are enjoying this wonderful weather we have had the last few days.

I am thinking of doing a Thursday afternoon knit along from 1:00Pm till 3:00Pm this will run till you are finished your project.

I have a new yarn in by Naturally called Mohair. It is a blend of mohair, wool and nylon and lovely to work with.. It is light weight and warm. There are some great patterns for it. What I am thinking about doing for this knit along is we would all be using the same yarn but you would be free to pick from among any of the patterns that they have for this yarn. I will be there to help you along with any problems.

There is no charge for this you just have to buy the yarn and the pattern to join us. I am hoping to start as soon as possible. I am just in the process of finishing pattern #N1125 the Scalloped Edge Cropped jacket and I am planning to knit pattern #N1139 . Warm Hands Network

You are all so amazing! I have just sent off a second box filled with gorgeous knitting to The Warm Hands Network in Ottawa, thanks to an anonymous donor who paid for the mailing.

Sock of the Month

I will be having the Sock of the Month Club again this year. Last year this went over very well, we all had a great time and learned lots of different sock knitting techniques.

This is not for beginner sock knitters. You really need to have already knit a pair or two of socks as I will not be teaching the basics. Each month there will be a different sock yarn and a new pattern. I try to include some new technique each time. Different heels, or toes, top down, toe up etc.

This will start on Thursday October . 6th at 7 pm. We always meet on the first Thursday of each month. This year we will meetin October, November and December and then take January and February off and then meet again for March, April, May and June. So 7 socks in all. So if you are interested in socks and are game to try new things please join us.

Fee: $22.00 & HST each month. this includes yarn and pattern.

What to bring : 2:25mm needles. either circulars or double pointed. Show and tell from last years socks or any great socks you have knit and would like to show off, we are always interested in other patterns and different yarns!!

If you would like to do the Sock of the Month but can’t attend the meetings I am more that happy to sell you the kit!! ( I can always give you a quick lesson on the technique we are using.) I can also mail order them if you are not close by.

Yarn storming

Hello Everyone,

Well, the trusty on-line encyclopaedia -Wikipedia - defines "Yarn Storming" as " a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn rather than cloth, spray paint or chalk".

And so you say, how does this interest me?? Well, check out the photos on my blog. An "un-named" group of knitters has taken the lead on this type of art and has yarn stormed ,or yarn bombed, a local bridge.

If you are in the area, just take a quick drive up the Vasey Road and go across the Sturgeon River bridge...look left and right, and see what this group has created! The bridge is between Rosemount Rd and Gervais Rd.

BEGINNER RUG
HOOKING

Come and learn a craft that is indigenous to North America. It is
very portable and with only one stitch to master, it is very easy to produce
a charming piece of artwork. You do not have to be an artist to participate.

What is this you ask? Your knitting turns out just the same. This is
another method of holding the yarn.

BASIC SOCK KNITTING

Amethyst Garden Shawl

This class will introduce the basics of lace knitting including: finding your
lace gauge: making sense of charts: reading your knitting: making friends with
stitch markers: basic short-row shaping: adding beads to your knitting, finishing
and proper blocking methods.

Fee: $40.00 & HST which includes the

BABY SWEATER KNIT
TOP DOWN ALL IN ONE
PIECE.
This is a great project to learn how to knit top down with no
seaming. Basic knitting skills required, knit, purl, cast on
and cast off all the rest you will learn. This little baby cardigan can be
knit in 3 different sizes 3-6 month,6-12 months, or 2 year. . Come out
and give it a try.
Fee; $45.00 which includes the pattern.
You will need needles and yarn, which can be purchased
here. Size 3.75mm circular and 3.75mm double pointed. Double
knitting yarn is what we will be using and I have several different ones
to choose from.

points. Some of these will be available to use during the class if you don't have
them.

Kathleen has been knitting since she earned her badge at Brownies. About 3 years ago, she was bit by the lace knitting "bug" and quickly
became addicted. So far, Kathleen has knit over 25 different shawls, including 12 shawls for the Ravelry "10 shawls in 2010" challenge, and her
project list just keeps on growing.

About Gayle Gunby

Gayle was raised for most of her childhood in the village of Coldwater,
however her Father's job with the C. P. R. took her and her sibling all
over Ontario. She returned to the village as their Kindergarten
teacher in 1970 and here she remains. Gayle has embraced most crafts
and became a certified Mayco ceramic teacher in 1980. Gayle is a self taught
rug hooker and one of her pieces is on permanent display in the Black
History and Cultural Museum in Collingwood. Pieces of her primitive
style handiwork can be found in homes all over Ontario as well as
Vancouver. Her inspiration comes from family...those here now and those who
have "passed over".

2007. I have always knit for as long as I can remember and have been spinning
my own yarns for the last 15 years. I have tried many other fibre art forms over the
years but always come back to the knitting and spinning. I am very interested in

Warm Hands Network

Hi Everyone,

I hope you have all been enjoying this great weather, hard to believe the summer is almost over!!

Just a reminder to everyone...... if you have items to hand in for our Charity project, (Warm Hands Network) I would like to have them before the end of next week, Sunday, September 4th, as I need to get them mailed off to them in Ottawa.

This is an on-going project, and their next shipment will go the end of January, so if you wanted to do something and have just run out of time, you can always do it for the next shipment.

I have received all kinds of wonderful knitted items to send and I thank you all so much for your generosity. Watch for more photos on my blog of all the items we will be sending.

Peggy Sue and Ravelry!!

Hello everyone

Well, I must say that this is a "Banner Day" for me! I have posted my first pattern on Ravelry and it has already sold!!

"Peggy Sue" is my first published pattern, and judging by all the various "Peggy Sue's" in the front windows of the Purple Sock, you all seem to like knitting her, making her your own and giving her your own special name.

In addition to the pattern,( which is also available here at the shop), I will be making kits for her too...these are still in the creating stage, but as soon as they are ready, I will post a note on here. She is addictive! So many various yarns can be used, so many different hair styles, and so many different ways to make her your own...and a great way to use up your stash as well.

I will also be doing another workshop on it in the fall, so stay tuned for that.

Linsey Projects

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are having a great summer and surviving this heat, just think of February and March and perhaps the heat won't seem so awful,lol!

One of the wonderful things about knitting is that it can be done year 'round and especially so when you have a fabulous yarn like Berroco's "Linsey"! Made in Italy, this summer weight yarn is 64% cotton and 36% linen, which makes for a soft, yet substantial hand to any item you knit.

The short sleeved top was made for our trip to Cuba and it proved invaluable! Great with slacks, shorts or over a swimsuit, it was a quick, easy knit. But nothing was as quick and easy as the lacy shrug! Just the perfect thing over a T-shirt or a little dress in the evening...several of the Purple Sock knitters have made this shrug, and the short sleeved cardigan is also something that Linsey just lends itself to....the drape is wonderful and the little details really show up as Linsey has great stitch definition...BUT, the last piece is my favourite! WOW! Isn't it great ( if I do say so myself!).... I can see that this piece is one I am going to wear a LOT! I love the way the back looks on this piece and I love the flow-y drape of the front panels too.

Purchase the yarn for a Linsey project and get the pattern or pattern book at 40% off for the month of August.

So, come on in, see the wonderful colours and the various pieces up close, try them on and finish out the summer with a Linsey project, there are lots more patterns in the shop as well. Stay cool!

Duck Race in Coldwater

Well the Duck Race is over again for another year. Each year the Business Improvement Association has a contest for window display.
The Purple Sock has won first prize again this year. This is our second year to win. Thanks to everyone that helped with it. Not sure if you can tell by the photo's but we had a train going around with little rubber ducks on it and some felted ducks around it. Also we used Izzy dolls as the crowd watching the the race.
Here are a couple of photos. It is not easy to take them as I always seem to get a glare or reflection from across the street.
I have lots of great summer yarns in the store, now that the warm weather is here you might want to knit a summer top or two. come on in and take a look.

YOU KNIT, WE SHIP!

Calling all crochetters knitters! How about dedicating some of your stash to an outstanding project? The Warm Hands Network and the Purple Sock are teaming up for this worthy cause.

We are knitting for the Innu of Northern Labrador. The items you create will be shipped to Sheshatsuit to warm Innu children and elders. The items are distributed by community health workers to families in need. They would be very grateful to receive warm clothing, hats, socks, sweaters or blankets, for children up to 12 years old.

The Moosonee Native Friendship Centre would like to receive hand-knit blankets, sweaters, hats and mittens for distribution through their pre- and post-natal programs and their Headstart program. The items are distributed to Cree children in Moosonee and up the James Bay coast.

Helpful Hints
• Knit or crochet your favorite patterns or try something new. Check out our web-site for patterns.
• Avoid white or very light colors. Feel free to mix a bright and cheery palate from your yarn collection! Machine washable is preferred.
• Please assume standard garment sizes. And, remember, warmth is very important – Labrador and James Bay have cold winters. Hats need to cover ears, sleeves need to go the wrist and torsos need to be long.
• No used items please.

Where? When?
You can drop off your projects at the Purple Sock, 13 Coldwater Road, Coldwater Ontario. Our deadline is September 0, 2011.

What is the Warm Hands Network? We will ship your charity knitting to our partners. We love knitting, and know there are children out there in need of a warm hat or blanket, pair of mittens or socks.

IZZY Dolls

You guys are amazing!! we have handed over 254 , yes I said 254 Izzy dolls to the Nursing progam at Georgian College.

Here are a couple of snaps of the Izzy Dolls that you all made. Aren't they amazing!!!
For anyone that didn' know , they are going with the nursing students from Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario as they travel to the Dominican Republic. there the nursing studends will be handing them out to children as they do basic nursing care.

I can just see the little hands which will be clutching these precious little dollies from Canada, holding them close and sleeping with them and just loving them to bits!!

A big thanks you to everyone that helped make the dolls, We had such a great reponse. Some ladies made dozens of them!!! And this just started about 4-5 weeks ago....knitters are such great people so generous and giving. ( Google "Izzy Dolls" to see the story of how they got their names, very poignant.)
I will be sending out another e-mail soon about about charity knitting project so hope you are not all knitted out.
Again thanks so much for all you help without all of you this would not have been possible.

New Assistant at the Purple Sock

Hello!

I am writing today to introduce my new assistant here at the Purple Sock! Her name is Lucinda, and while she is very shy and quiet, she is doing a great job of showcasing the gorgeous samples of finished pieces we have here in the shop.

Her sweater is knit from our "March Madness" special, Berroco's Ultra Alpaca..this luscious yarn is 50% Super Fine Alpaca and 50% Peruvian wool. It comes in three weights including Ultra Alpaca , Ultra Alpaca Light and Ultra Alpaca Fine, and all three weights are on sale in March for 15% off the regular price! In addition, we have some wonderful pattern books for this yarn, including Lucinda's stunning green sweater which she is wearing here for her debut!

Lucinda is going to be quite the clothes horse I think, she is already thinking of changing sweaters to the lovely teal one I knit from the Ultra Alpaca and Ultra Alpaca fine and while she just adores the lovely beret she is wearing, I saw her eyeing a pretty blue one which is here in the shop as well. It's a good thing I knit a lot and can keep her in the stylish knit items I think she is going to want.

charity knitting

Hello Everyone!

Six of our eight grandchildren were at our home for a sleep-over this past weekend, and between movies and treats and brushing their hair and getting everyone ready for bed, it was very hectic....BUT it made me stop and realize how very lucky we are. They are all warm and happy and healthy and have pretty much everything they need to keep them that way.

And I got to thinking of all the children who don't have even the basics..good food, fresh water, miniumum healthcare or even a little toy or doll...so, in that vein...here is my latest idea!

Georgian College's Nursing students do a stint each year in the Dominican Republic as part of their program. They have to pay to get themselves there, pay for the supplies they know they will need there, and this requires a lot of fund-raising and support from friends and family.. In addition, these "Izzy" dolls are always part of the travelling group, as while they travel to the Dominican stuffed in between medical supplies, as soon as they get there, they are free to go out and "play with the kids!"

So, here is what I propose....let's all get together and make Izzy dolls for these kids who have probably never had a toy. Next Thursday, February 24th at The Purple Sock from7-9PM, we will be knitting up Izzy Dolls! I will have lots of small balls of acrylic yarns available for you, the pattern is free, the stuffing is here, and we will have a great time! You will need 3mm needles, so if you have those, bring 'em along, as well as any extra acrylic or novelty yarns that you have.

BUT, if for some reason you cannot come on Thursday, but still want to be involved, here are some other options:

1. I can send you the pattern and you can get started at home.

2. If you are not a knitter, you can donate a Loonie or a Twoonie towards the purchasing of supplies or more stuffing.

3. You can drop off your extra acrylic yarns to make room for more yarn that you will actually use, lol! or stuffing that you are not going to use.

4. You could even pick up the dolls and help embroider the faces if embroidery is your thing.....

So, all in all, this is an exciting project and I wanted to email and tell you about it...please feel free to give me a call or email if you have any questions!

Hopefully, we will see you at 7PM on Thursday, the 24th at The Purple Sock.

Happy New Year everyone!

Now that all our Christmas knitting is finished, and everyone is wearing the lovely hats, mitts, scarves, that we made for them, I think it's time now to make some things for ourselves.

So I decided to make this terrific hat from Woolly Wormhead from the newest colours that we have in the shop of Cascade 220. I love working with this yarn, and this pattern worked up so quickly. There are many patterns in the Woolly Wormhead line, each one prettier than the last. Come on in and see the whole series, I can see making a lot of hats from this line.

Whenever I see a pattern where I can make something in an HOUR, I am totally on board,lol! These fingerless mitts are just the thing to make for yourself to match your new Christmas coat, or the scarf that, hopefully, someone else made for you. The 'hour' refers to the time to make each mitt, but this pattern will make up a pair in a short evening! Plus, it's a FREE pattern, so that makes it even better! Mine were made from Sirdar Escape Chunky , it took 2 balls but if you got 3 balls there would be more that enough to make two pairs, one for you and one for a gift!

christmas knitting

a very quick post hope you all had a wonderful Christmas , it goes by so quickly.
just wanted to show you a photo of my two girls and some of my Christmas knitting, I think they like what I made, they also have on fingerless gloves which you can't see in the photo. They have both told me they have already used the hats!
The other shot is of my Mom , she is wearing her new vest and also 2 other scarves that belonged to other people, not sure why she had them on but it was a really good shot of her.

Seasons Greeting and Holiday Hours

Happy Holidays Everyone!

As 2010 comes quickly to a close, I just want to take a moment to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and to send my best wishes for a safe and wonderful 2011.

2010 was a very special year here at The Purple Sock...I celebrated my third year in business in May, added more lines of wonderful yarns to the shop, had some terrific classes, and oh, we hosted our 1st Pyjama Party!, and we published the Purple Sock Cookbook, which will benefit several womens' charities in our area.

So all in all, 2010 was a fabulous year, and I send you all my sincere thanks, and appreciation, for without all of you and your continued support of my shop, there would be no Purple Sock.

And so, in order to have a wee rest ( and to do the year-end inventory), I will be closing on December 24th at 4.00pm and reopening on January 5th. but I hope to see you all in the New Year, ready to start new projects!

Frill seeker and great hats!!

The photo is of one of my customers and her husband who stopped in last Saturday evening when Coldwater had its Candlelight walk and Santa Claus parade. They looked so cute I had to share the photo I took of them with you. Not sure where she got the pattern but they were great.

I have now received an order of the new frill seeker colours. they are the top three on the link below. #Q50211, Q50212, and Q50213 I am afraid the other colours(older ones) will not be in now before January, so if you were counting on them for Christmas knitting you will need to get something else or one of the new colours. If you want any of the new colours please e-mail or phone me and I will put them on hold for you, as I am sure they will go fast.

Sock of the Month

I am way behind on my posting, just don't know where the time goes. We have
now had two socks of the Month, October and November, here are photos of them both.
If anyone is interested in joining us in the adventure you are more than welcome.
Some come once a month and we have show and tell from last months sock , then I show them the new sock, this is the first Thursday of the month, we will be having it in December and then take January and Febuary off as driving can sometimes be bad, then we will be back for March, April, May and June. Not everyone comes out some just pick theirs up and one or two I mail. So if you are interested just give me a call or an e-mail.
If anyone wants to do the October of November sock I still have some kits left in a few different colours.

Coldwater's First Annual Witches Night

Hello Everyone,

Well, fall is in the air and with it comes Coldwater's First Annual Witches Night!! Several downtown merchants will open their doors on Wednesday night, October 20th from 7-9PM for you ladies who come attired in your best "Witch get-up!" Pointy hats, black capes, noses with warts, we are anxious to see all of you out and about on the Witches Walk!

All over town, there will be music, treats, fun, prizes, AND here at the Purple Sock, we will be offering a drop-in needle felting workshop to make an adorable pumpkin for you to take home and add to your Halloween decorations...use it as a pin cushion, a decoration, a brooch, or as one half of a great pair of earrings,lol! but come on in, enjoy a cup of "Lynn's Famous Witches Brew" and while you are here, check out the newest patterns, needle holders and of course, the great new yarns "witch" are arriving daily!

The Purple Sock Cookbook!!

Hello everyone!

Well, it's a known fact that we have amazing and talented knitters here at "The Purple Sock" but we ALSO have amazing and talented cooks and bakers! Every week, it seems someone is bringing in great cakes,cookies, squares and tarts, you name it, we have enjoyed it with cups of great teas from "Lady Londonderry" to "Caribbean Dreams", or the "Johnny Depp tea!

And so, we have decided to launch our first ever Cookbook....and here is what we need from you, our devoted customers, visitors, class takers, everyone! Please type or write out your favourite recipe, anything from crock pot recipes to your favourite cake or cookie, or that quick throw-together meal that everyone always raves about, whatever you are 'famous' for, the one where everyone says "Wow, can I have THAT recipe?!"

We will gather them together, and compile them in a terrific cookbook which we will have ready by early December, just in time for gift-giving, stocking stuffing, or "just because I was thinking of you". We are going to keep the cost as reasonable as possible so they will be a quick, affordable and desired gift for sure. In addition, we want you to know that as soon as the printing costs are paid, each and every cent of the profit will go to womens' charities that are near and dear to our hearts.

Please send your recipes to Debbe Bloom at mapleleafgirl31@hotmail.com Debbe is a new knitter here at "The Purple Sock" and she will take care of all of the 'hunting and gathering " of recipes. Please feel free to send in as many recipes as you wish, but depending on the response we receive, we cannot guarantee that every recipe will be printed ( but we will try!)

So, PLEASE go to your computer( or hand write) and dash off a couple( or more) recipes...let us know a little story behind it if you wish,( not necessary though), plus your name and town. Also, if you have any little knitting tips that are 'tried and true' for you , we would love to include those as well.

Monkey Business

A while ago I post a photo of felted bananas so for anyone that hasn't been to the store in the last little while here is a couple of photos of my windows that went with the bananas. The Monkey pattern and yarns have been very popular and I am having trouble keeping it in stock. I just got in a new batch of the pattern book and lots more of the yarn.
So if you were wanting it come on in and get some. These will make great Christmas presents. It is not only the young kids that are really liking them the adults, teens and pre-teens are going crazy for them.

Empire Club Winner and Felted Mitts

Congradulations to Cathy for winning a bag of Freedom Spirit yarn from The Empire Club it was so nice that one of my customers were one of the winners. As you can see from the photo she has already picked out a pattern to knit it with. We will look forward to seeing the finished sweater.
I know it is hard in this hot weather to think about winter and Christmas but it comes all too soon. Felted mitts using Freedom Spirit and the Fiber Trends felted mitts pattern have been very popular they will make great Christmas gifts and knit up quite fast. There are lots of different Freedom spirit colours to pick from.

New Bags at The Purple Sock

Hello Everyone,

I have come across some great new bags that I am now carrying at "The Purple Sock"! They are gorgeous, very well made, with twelve pockets ( 6 inside and 6 outside), and they have a wonderful top closure with a heavy duty co-ordinating zipper. Plus there are nice long straps which go all the way around the bag, so there is no danger of the straps ever pulling free of the bag, and the colours and heavy duty upholstery fabrics are simply wonderful. And on top of all that...they are made right here in Ontario!

I can think of so many uses for these bags, in addition to carrying your knitting projects...they are super to carry your laptop, or to take on the plane as a carry-on, they would make a terrific diaper bag, or an over-nighter to a friends house, they are even sturdy enough for you rug hookers out there, to carry your small cutter, a hoop and your pattern and wool!

So stop using those grocery store bags to carry around your knitting projects...and treat yourself to one of these the next time you are in...they are $45.00 and they will last you for years and years....hope you enjoy picking out your favourite from the pictures attached, call me and I will put it aside for you ( plus there are dozens more we couldn't get into the photographs..come in and check them out!).

Anyone who hasn't been to store in awhile will not have seen my summer window display. These are part of it. Can you guess what goes along with these wonderfully felted bananas that were done by one of the Wednesday sip and stitch group. It is hard to tell them from the real thing.

New Summer Yarns

Hi everyone!

Warm weather doesn't always make me think of knitting sweaters....but, when the yarn is as gorgeous as these two, well, you can see from the photos, I have been busy making summer sweaters!

Light and airy,and oh so soft on your skin, these sweaters are just the thing for those chilly summer evenings sitting out on the deck under the stars, or walking down to the dock for a quick last minute spin on the boat as the sun is setting.

We have lots of patterns for sweet little cap-sleeved "T's", lovely tank tops, light cardigans,and this beautiful 'swing' type sweater with the lovely lapels. Feel free to stop by and try on the many samples in the shop. It's so much easier to make your decision when you can actually try on the sweater and feel the yarn...

And speaking of yarn..the top row in the photo is the 100% "Ultra Pima" cotton from Cascade Yarns. This is a great yarn which will work up easily and quickly..and the colours are so luscious! This cotton feels like silk, it is so soft and gentle.

The other yarn, which is just yummy to work with is "Origami", from Berroco. A great combination of acrylic, linen, nylon and cotton, this yarn has a wonderful 'spring' to it, which makes for a sweater with a lot of life, plus it keeps its' shape wonderfully and the drape is amazing.

The Duck Race and First Prize for window display

Well it has been just too long since I have posted anything here. Alot has happened and the time just seem to get away from me. Coldwater hosts a Duck Race each spring and this year the BIA asked the store owners to decorate their windows for it and there would be prizes. Well the Wednesday Sip and Stitch group put their heads together and then worked very hard on wonderful needle felted ducks. The windows were wonderful and we WON FIRST PRIZE. The ducks were just amazing everyone is so talented. We have celebrated by using our winning to buy lunch after sip and stitch.
I am posting a few photos of the windows sorry they are so bad. I am finding it very hard to take photos of the windows, in the daytime I get too much reflection and I tryed at night hence the flash you see in the photo. If anyone has any suggestions I am all ears.
Thanks to all that helped make such a wonderful window!!

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that helped make Saturday such a great success. It was a very busy day here at the store. The needle felting workshop was great. Thanks to Eileen for teaching this. I saw alot of wonderful flowers coming out from it, hope you all enjoyed it.
Without all of you great friends and customers the store would not be here and certainly not as much fun as it is.
I am sure everyone that won one of the door prizes were happy. Thanks so much to all my suppliers who provided them.
I am sorry there were such long waits to pay on Saturday, next time I do something like this I will make sure I have extra help with it.
I meant to take some photos that day and it was so busy it just didn't happen. So here are a couple of shots of the store on a regular day for anyone that hasn't seen it in person.

Another great afghan

here is a photo of another one of the great Afghans by another member of the Thursday morning knit along group.
The Thursday morning group have been working on Sally Melville's Einstein Coat. They are really coming along there are now 3 of them finished, I will post a group photo once they are all done. We will be soon starting a summer sweater, if anyone is interested in joining us you are more than welcome to do so. This time we will not all be knitting the same thing there are lots of different ones to pick from.

Thursday Morning knit along

During the past few month the Thursday morning knit along group has been working on afghan squares, learning new stitches. There were 10 different squares. Many of them had never done a cable before or lace type stitches. It was an on going project with a new square every other Thursday, we all learned lots from it. They could knit as few or as many of each square as they wanted making blankets of whatever size they wanted. Some used many different colours and some did it all in one colour. I have to confess that my blanket is far from done. Each time I did knit just enough of each square to make sure I could do it and know what I was talking about. Sometime when I have some extra time mine will get done. In the mean time here are photo's of two of them that are finished with more to come as they complete them.
I think they should be very proud of the work, they are wonderful to look at, each one is so different depending on the yarn and the way they put them together. Way to go all of you!!

March Sock of the Month

I am not sure where all the time goes, in a couple of days it will be time for the April Sock of the Month. Anyway this is the March Sock which is done toe-up which is new to alot of the knitters in our group. I hope they liked it!! The sock is done in Foot loose from diamond yarns.

I am now carry the Interweave Crochet magazine, the spring 2010 just came in.

The March/April/May 2010 issue of the R.U.G Hooking is also here and going fast.

If anyone is looking for them I am also now stocking the Kollage Square Knitting needles and just got in some of Mirasol beautiful Hacho yarn which is hand dyed in Peru. There are always new things coming in all the time. Do stop by and take a look and talk a little knitting.

The most wonderful Gift

A few days ago I mentioned I received a wonderful gift from the Rug hookers that come to my store. Anyone that has spent time at the store will know that the chairs in the backroom had the worst looking chair pads in the world, they were well worn and falling apart. Yes you might have guessed by now they all hooked chair pads for the chairs. I have started to do one which is still no where near finished but will
be someday. I am very touched by this as I know how much time and effort goes into the making of them. They all designed their own there is a sheep theme that is for sure and surprise, surprise a purple theme also. They are presented in no particular order just the order I took the photos in, they are all unique and truly wonderful.

February Sock of the Month

Sorry for not posting in so long , time just seems to get away from me.
Yesterday I was given a most wonderful gift from the "hookers" (Rug hookers that is)
that hang out at my store, so you will have to stay tuned to see what it was, as I need to take photos before I post about it. I am so very touched and excited. Thanks to all of them!!

The new issues of Vogue and Knitters and also knitscene are now in. So lots to look at.

Here is a photo of the January Sock of the Month. Hope you like it, it is my own design. If you are interested in joining us each month or even in doing one of them please give me a call or e-mail. I am happy to mail them out. January is done in Berroco Ultra Alpaca fine and has a band heel which was new to me. It is always good to try something different, you never know what you will like.

Happy Holiday Season

I just wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the coming year. Also to thank everyone for your support over the last year. The store has taken on a life of it's own and I am so happy. Without all of you this would have not been possible. So thank you so much!!

The Purple Sock will be closed between Christmas and New Years for a few days holiday and to do my year end inventory. I will be closed from December 25 th till January 5 th. Reopening on Wednesday January 6th.

December Sock of the Month and new knitting needles

Hope you are all somewhere warm it has been snowing and blowing here for several days and we going to get more yet!! Please drive safe.
The December Sock of the Month was made using Fleece Artist Trail Sock yarn which was wonderful to knit with. This Sock has an afterthought heel and the star toe which were both new to me. I think I like the heel and will do it again. There are still some kits left if you would like one and there is still room if you want to sign up to meet with us each month or have it mailed to you. You can see a past post for more information or e-mail me or give me a call.
I now have in stock some of the Kollage square knitting needles, you can find out more about them on there website which is http://kollageyarns.com/ I tryed knitting with a set of them last night and they feel very nice.

Starting them young , and the Christmas Stocking Challenge

This little beauty was born a few weeks ago and is already attending the Wednesday Sip and Stitch sporting her hand knit outfit. She arrived into this world a bit ahead of schedule but even though she is quite small is doing very well and seem to like spending time here at the store with her Mom. congratulations to the whole family what a wonderful addition she is!!

Thanks to everyone that handing in Christmas Stockings they are all wonderful and I hope to have them displayed in the window very soon. Once they are there I hope you will drop in and vote for your favourite one. For anyone that reads this and can't come in I will try to post a photo of them and you can vote by e-mail.

November Sock of the Month and Christmas Stocking Challenge

Well we had the second Sock of the Month Club and almost everyone had finished there sock from last month and seeming to be quite pleased with them. Here is this months sock, if you are interested in doing it I still have a few kits left. I talked about using 2 circular needles to knit socks with and most are giving it a try, hope they are enjoying it. We will see when they come back for the December meeting.

Matida's skirt and my windows

I thought you might like to see my fall window display. The Caterpillar is called Sockertis and he is very proud of his many hand knit socks!!

Matilda is now proudly wearing her skirt, just in time for the cold weather.
thanks to everyone that helped to knit it. We had a brand new knitter knit on it as well as 2 young boys I think they were 12 and 15 do some stitches and people from all across the country. The bus to Sudbury broke down here in Coldwater and there was a knitter on the bus who found my store, she worked on Matilda's skirt and then brought back another girl that had never knit before and gave her her first knitting lesson on Matilda's skirt, so hopefully Matilda has inspired her to learn more!!

Just a reminder that the Christmas stocking for the challenge need to be handing in by November the 15Th.
Also the next sock of the month will be on November 5Th. If anyone is interested and not yet signed up there is still time to do so.

October Sock of the Month

The Sock of the Month Club got off to a great start. I was very happy with the interest it has created. We had a wonderful turn out for our first meeting. I also had several to mail away and several that were picked up by people that couldn't attend. I still have a few kits left if anyone wants to buy one. This first sock is made with Jawoll by Lang which comes with a spool of re-enforcing yarn to add in to the heels and toes. This is a self patterning yarn, it is knit using a twisted rib cuff and the eye of the partridge heel stitch. A good basic sock to get us started. The Christmas Stocking Challenge

Just a reminder about the Christmas Stocking Challenge. I have given you all a few extra days. It is now to be handed in by November 15th.
The Stocking can be made by any method , any medium, be creative. It must have been made within the last year. As in the Tea cosy challenge that we did in the spring I will use the Stockings as my Christmas window display and have customers vote for their favourite one and there will be prizes for the 3 with the most votes. So get busy and make a Stocking, I know you can do it!!

Beginner Rug Hooking Class

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Beginner Rug Hooking Class will take place starting on October 17th from 10-12 , it will be on four Saturday mornings, Oct 17, Oct24th, Oct 31 and Nov. 14. The Sock of the Month

Here are the details for The Sock of the Month Club.

The cost is $20.00 & Gst + Pst. each month.

This will include a pattern and yarn to make a pair of socks.

We will meet the first Thursday of each month starting in October which happens to be the first of October, from 7 till about 8:30 or 9 pm. at the store.

For people that can't attend or are not interested in attending but would still like to receive a kit. I will mail them out a couple of days before that or they can come and pick up their kit on the first Thursday of the month or anytime after that.

If you are having it mailed there will also be a mailing cost which is about $6.00 depending on your location.

The first few kits will be very basic socks to get us going and then we will start with a few different methods and different stitch patterns. Each month will be a different yarn. Some I have been carrying in the store now and some will be new ones I have never had before. This is a great way to try out different yarns and patterns. Most months I will pick the colourway but sometimes there will be a choice of colours in the same type of yarn. If there is a colour you really really don't like let me know and I will try to avoid it for you. I am open to suggestions of yarns, patterns and sock knitting methods you are interested in trying. This will continue on for as long as there is interest. You can join or leave at anytime. Please give me two weeks notice before the next month if you will no longer be involved . For anyone that is not sure if they want to be involved I will have some kits for sale at the store once the people signed up have received theirs.There will only be a limited number of them depending on how many people are signed up that month.

Matilda needs a skirt!!

Matilda was made by my husband and stands just outside my store and I think she needs a knitted skirt. So I would like help to make one. I am inviting anyone that stops by the store to help knit it for her. You can knit a few stitches or a whole row or many rows whatever you like

I do have lots of odd and ends of yarn here or if you would like to contribute some fun bit of yarn you have kicking around feel free to do so. The more colours and the more knitters the better. So please stop by and help Matilda out.

SOCK OF THE MONTH

This fall I will be starting a Sock of the Month club. This is something I have wanted to do since I opened the store. All the details are not in place yet but I will be posting them soon. As you might have guessed there will be a different sock to knit each month. If you think you might be interested please let me know. I am not asking you to commit to it right now just looking to see how many might be interested. I am open to suggestions as to sock patterns and method of running this.

We will be starting with a very basic pattern the first month. I am planning to have a group where you can come and meet once a month to get the new kit and we can all admire the sock from the month before and go over any new techniques in the new kit or there might also be people that will stop by to pick up there kit or people that can't get in that would like me to mail it to them. I am also thinking that people could sign up for every month or every other month , which ever works best for them.

Christmas Stocking Challenge!!

The tea cozy challenge was a great success and I will be having another challenge this time to make a Christmas Stocking. It can be made by any method you want. I ask that it has been made sometime this year, not something you have made many years ago. I will keep them over Christmas as my window display. As with the Tea cozy Challenge I will be asking customers to vote for their favourite and there will be prizes. They need to be handed in by November 1st. 2009. I know that seems like a long time off but time goes by quickly. so start creating and join in the fun!!

The Purples Sock sells quality yarns mainly natural fibred with a great many of them coming from Canada, also roving for spinning and felting. I carry rug hooking supplies and needle tatting supplies. I give knitting classes and rug hooking and needle tatting classes which are taught by a couple of other people. I also have a line of loose leaf teas (about 48 different kinds) tea pots and some other gift items.

New Knit along project

Hi All

Just a short note to let you know that we will be starting a new project on Thursday mornings in the knit along group.Anyone is welcome to join us. You only need basic knitting skills. We will be starting on June 4th. This time we are knitting a small shoulder shawl. The pattern is from CabinFever. We will be using a Double knitting yarn and it will cost about $25.00 for the yarn and pattern. You will need a circular needle at least 5.50mm or a bit larger. As this is a shawl tenison is not so important. The sample I knit using a 6mm.This sample is here at the store if you would like to see it.Happy knitting and do take time to enjoy the wonderful weather we are now having.Lynn
